Deronda Metz, a longtime leader in the Salvation Army, was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine by Governor Roy Cooper. This prestigious award, North Carolina’s highest civilian honor, was given to Metz in recognition of her over 30 years of dedicated service, particularly as the Director of Social Services at the Salvation Army’s Center of Hope Emergency Shelter for women and children.

During her tenure, Metz significantly expanded emergency housing and transformed the overnight shelter into a 24/7 program offering employment assistance, substance abuse support, and health services. She also helped establish access to 60 affordable apartments for families and fought against human trafficking in Mecklenburg, Union, and Anson counties. Despite retiring, Metz plans to continue her involvement with the Charlotte Salvation Army’s advisory board, exemplifying her unwavering commitment to the community.
