North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson proposed removing science and history from first through fifth grade public schools, as well as dissolving the State Board of Education according to statements made in his new, soon-to-be published book.

Mark Robinson explained in his book the “demand proficiency in reading, writing, and math in grades one through five…. In those grades, we don’t need to be teaching social studies. We don’t need to be teaching science. We surely don’t need to talk about equity and social justice.”

North Carolina’s superintendent of public instruction is in charge of enforcing the state’s public school laws. According to laws from the state of North Carolina, “all matters pertaining to the public schools in their respective administrative units and they shall enforce the school law in their respective units.”

Mark Robinson is no stranger to controversy and has made a number of radical statements which have thrust him into the spotlight.  Robinson recently claimed that if the U.S. government “gets too big for its britches,” he’s threatened to fill them “with some led” with an AR-15.

Robinson refused to comment further on his stance regarding science and social studies in elementary classrooms, but emphasized that he did not consider making it a policy option. Robinson recently spoke on education at a round-table event on Tuesday, August 23rd in downtown Durham and his book is set to publish on September 13th.
