A recent report from the Trust for Public Land has placed Charlotte and Mecklenburg County among the lowest-ranked metro areas for parks and green space, coming in at 87th out of 100. Despite the abundance of park acres, most residents do not live within a ten-minute walk of a park, which significantly affects overall accessibility. Additionally, safety concerns have arisen following several incidents, including an April shooting at a local greenway, deterring public use.

Advocacy groups are urging for improved safety measures and a more equitable distribution of park amenities. The report also highlights disparities in park accessibility based on race and income, indicating a need for more inclusive urban planning. Charlotte’s current ranking reflects a gap in providing sufficient amenities like dog parks and basketball hoops, essential for enhancing community engagement and recreational opportunities.
